Professor of Sustainable Construction at University of the West of England and Visiting Professor at the Open University
Dr Alice Moncaster is Professor of Sustainable Construction at UWE Bristol, and co-Director of the research centre of excellence CABER, and a Visiting Professor at the Open University.
Alice has worked in industry as a civil engineer and building structures design engineer. She has carried out earthquake engineering research at Bristol University and completed a PhD at the UEA School of Environmental Sciences on the critical problem of improving sustainability in our built environment. From 2008 to 2017 Alice was part of the Centre for Sustainable Development at Cambridge, as a Senior Research Associate and then lecturer, as well as Director and Deputy Director of the Interdisciplinary Design for the Built Environment programme, before moving to the OU in 2017, and then UWE in 2023.
Alice’s research seeks to improve the environmental sustainability of the processes of construction, and of its product, the built environment. Particularly interests include life cycle analysis and embodied impacts of buildings, integration of renewable energy technologies, low carbon building materials, applying the principles of circular economy in construction, and retrofitting existing buildings.
Alice is committed to improving inclusivity and diversity within engineering and the construction industry, for fairer treatment of under-represented groups, for a better working environment for all, and for improved decision making leading towards greater innovation.
