Florian Jaeckle is Chief Technology Officer at Lyzeum Ltd, a University of Cambridge spin-out, Visiting Research Associate in the Departments of Pathology and Engineering at the University of Cambridge, and Research Fellow at Hughes Hall.
His research focuses on developing machine learning software to improve the speed and accuracy of diagnosing small intestinal biopsies. In particular, he has worked extensively on improving the diagnosis of coeliac disease, a common but underdiagnosed condition that is associated with significant inter-pathologist variability. He recently published a study in NEJM AI demonstrating that Lyzeum’s AI system achieves diagnostic accuracy comparable to that of the most experienced pathologists. Alongside this work, he has led extensive patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) activities focused on the use of AI in healthcare. He is currently working towards regulatory approval of the software for clinical use in the NHS.
Prior to his work in healthcare, Florian completed a PhD at the University of Oxford focused on AI safety and later worked at Apple on reducing bias in AI systems. He also recently completed the Royal Society Pairing Scheme, during which he spent a week in Westminster paired with an MP, and has since submitted evidence to POST and a House of Lords Committee.
