Steve's last full-time role was as an executive Board member of Ofcom, the UK regulator responsible for telecommunications and media. He served as Chief Technology Officer, Chief Strategy Officer, and as Acting Chief Executive. Before becoming a regulator, he spent several years in the private sector, working for high-tech start-ups developing new wireless communications technologies.

He now has a portfolio of non-executive and advisory roles in the technology sector. These include being a board member of Building Digital UK, commissioner at the Geospatial Commission, chair of Cambridge Wireless, advisory board member at Faculty AI. A common theme across his portfolio is an interest in how markets exploit disruptive technologies, and how public policy can maximise the resulting benefits. And he has just published a book - ‘From Beacon Fires to Fibre Broadband’ - which explores how technology and politics have repeatedly collided across the last two centuries.
